Fridays That Build Confidence

A Mentoring Story from LaGrange Elementary

At LaGrange Elementary in Oldham County Public Schools, Christy stepped into a new role this year: mentor. She was matched with a small group of four girls—four different personalities, four different sets of needs, and four voices that deserve to be heard.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create consistent, caring mentoring relationships that help students feel seen, supported, and capable—at school and beyond.

Our Vision

We envision a community where every child has trusted adults and positive peers in their corner, and where schools, families, and community partners work together so students can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

What We’re Working Toward (Our Goals)

  • Connection: Build safe spaces where students can show up as themselves.
  • Confidence: Strengthen self-belief through encouragement, practice, and positive experiences.
  • Communication: Help students develop the skills to speak up, listen well, and build healthy relationships.
  • Consistency: Provide a predictable rhythm of support that students can count on.
  • Collaboration: Partner with schools and community stakeholders so the support around a child is aligned and reinforcing.

The Story: A Small Group, a Big Shift

Christy meets with her group each week. Over time, one mentee shared something simple but powerful: she looks forward to Fridays because of their group time. In her words, “our group getting together and talking is a fun time!”

That statement matters—not because it sounds like a big milestone, but because it is. When a student starts looking forward to a consistent, positive connection with peers and a trusted adult, it tells us something important: the relationship is working.

This same student was very quiet in the beginning. Early on, she stayed on the edges of conversation and held her thoughts close. But week after week, Christy noticed a change. With a steady routine and a safe place to belong, the mentee began to open up. Christy can tell she feels more confident and comfortable now—more willing to participate, share, and simply be present.

Why Collaboration Matters

Mentoring is never just a one-person effort. It works best when it’s collaborative—when the mentor, the school, and the larger community are moving in the same direction.

When mentors are supported by school partners, and when the program is aligned with what students are experiencing in the classroom and in their peer relationships, students receive a clearer message: you matter here, and you have a team behind you.

Why This Work Matters

Confidence doesn’t appear overnight. For many students, it grows through small moments repeated over time: a welcoming smile, a question asked with genuine interest, a chance to speak without being rushed, a group that listens, a Friday they can count on.

That’s what mentoring makes possible—steady support that becomes a foundation. And sometimes, the first sign of real growth is simply this: a student who once stayed quiet begins to look forward to being heard.

Join the Collaborative Effort

This story reflects what’s possible when caring adults show up consistently and when schools and community partners work together. If you’re interested in partnering, or supporting this work, we’d love to connect and explore how we can expand the impact—one relationship, one group, and one Friday at a time.
